41mm Stop Chamfered Stair Spindle

To achieve a flawless, modern and high-quality finish to your staircase, it’s important to fit our chamfered spindles correctly. Make sure that newel posts are fitted first and then the base rails and handrails afterwards.

Before you fit a chamfered spindle, you need to find the angle of your stairs by using a sliding bevel or angle finder.

Once you have this, you can cut your spindles at the top and bottom at the right angle and length. Make sure that you try each spindle between the handrail and base rail by sliding it from the bottom of the staircase to the top to check that you have the right cut. Doing this will ensure that any rail run-out is accommodated.

When you’ve cut all of your spindles, you’ll need to cut your spindle spacers from the fillet strip in our rail kit. This should be cut at the same angle as the stairs, and you should make sure that each spindle is spaced no more than 99mm apart.

Now you can begin inserting the stop chamfered spindles from the bottom of the staircase. Insert the first spacer, followed by a spindle, and make sure you continue doing this. We recommend dry fitting your spindles and spacers before you fix them into place, then bed all spindles and spacers on PVA wood adhesive. We also suggest that you pin the spindles in place, making sure that panel pins are inserted below the level of the spindle space, so that the spacer will hide the head of the panel pin.

After this, you should counter-sink any panel pin heads that are showing on the spindle spacer into the timber and fill with a matching wood filler.

Follow the same process for the landing spindles.

All handrail heights on a staircase are measured from the front bullnose of a step to the top of the handrail.

Spindles must not allow a sphere the size of 100mm in diameter to pass between each spindle.
